What Motivates Your Children?

For that matter, what motivates you?  This is an interesting video.  (Hat tip to Why Homeschool.)  Although the model is from the business world, it certainly could apply to education.  True to the research findings, my own kids are not motivated by rewards when there is even a rudimentary cognitive process involved in the work.  This research actually gives unschooling (done right) a lot of support.

Wherefore is there a price in the hand of a fool to get wisdom,
seeing he hath no heart to it?

  1. Wow, you are right! This does say something for the unschooler. I like the part about paying them enough so they don't worry about money. That would be nice.

PS The apron is 99% done. I will post a pic when my mom uploads them.

  2. It's perfect, Jenn. The kids don't have to worry about the money. Their room and board are paid, and they get lots of other benefits, too! :D

  3. Very interesting. Not sure I'm ready to completely unschool. But what about giving more choices? Maybe a week or so to work on anything that they want, like the 24 hour example in the video. Definitely something to think about. Thanks for sharing this!

    Blessings!

  4. Yes, Sharity, I was thinking, too, that one day a week or some such other plan might be good here. We'd need some good guidelines, though. They could do something educational ~ a project, make something, write a paper on a topic of their choice, etc. No Legos or blogging or Leave It to Beaver reruns. lol. :D

  5. That was interesting. I think that ties in a bit with our geography "class" too, where the girls pick a state out of a hat (can actually), they know the guidelines of what I want but then are totally self directed to do their own research and become the "experts" of their state. It als ties in with music lessons for mastery and nursing home, ministry, and one-room schoolhouse for purpose. I also see it in their math curriculum, they much more enjoy math when it's practical -- like Consumer Math, where we are taking much of what they already know in math, but then applying it to everyday life situations. Good common sense stuff.

The cartooning was amazing as well.

  6. Yes, Jane, you do some great things there. I asked my kids if they would be interested in doing their own educational thing one day a week, and they aren't. They want completely boxed curriculum this year so they know the rules and when exactly they will be done with it! :O
