More About Snakes

All this snakey talk got me doing a little more research on snakebites. Here is what I found out:

  • 90-100% of reported snakebites occur between April and October, NOT in February.

  • The national average for snakebite-related deaths is only four per year, with Texas, Florida, and Georgia being the states where snakebites occur the most frequently.

  • The vast majority of snakebites (is that one word, or two?) occur on the hand, NOT on the ankle or leg, which explains the next fascinating fact:

  • The most common profile of a bite victim is a young intoxicated male. (Duh.)

  • The ratio of male to female vicitims is 9:1.  That means most of my five-female, one male family is safe, lol.

  • Many adult venomous snakes deliver "dry bites" containing no venom, since they prefer to warn larger animals away without wasting the venom they need for their next meal. They know a human is too big to eat.

  • In this country, more people die from being hit by lightning each year than from being bit by a venomous snake.

  • Injuries and fatalities caused by dogs, cats and horses also vastly outnumber problems caused by snakes!

So.  This last little tidbit puts us in a much safer environment than some of our friends here, PlainJane and Cherryblossoms.  Ha ha!

  1. Okay, so I guess you can start worrying about us now. I've been bitten by most all our animals and thankfully, it wasn't fatal lol No, I know what you are saying - I pray every time we go out working with the horses. I've been bitten, kicked, stepped on, drug, and crushed by our horses -- I learn the hard way, but try with each incident for it never to be repeated. There are a lot of horse accidents up here, even fatalities - because there are so many horses. You can never let your guard down for a second. Maybe I should sell the horses and buy a rattlesnake.

  2. No we didn't get the treadmill (again) but I did catch DH shopping for one online and told one of the kids to tell him I wasn't interested in one anymore lol. I still am... but there is so many other 'needs' that are screaming out.

Did you try bribing your neighbors with cookies and banana bread? lol

  3. Right up there with "Eternity, the Ultimate Adventure" is another favorite quote that keeps things in perspective for me:

    "It's all gonna burn."

This is especially helpful to me as an author and keeps me from ever even THINKING about getting up on my high-horse about BEING an author. My books are all going to burn. Move on, Suzy. Imagine 'em; write 'em; bless the kids with 'em; but don't DWELL on 'em. They're all gonna burn!

Perhaps this sort of attitude may help you with your MS Word irritations. Oops...No! I didn't mean burn it NOW!

    LOL
