This is my first post on Tightwad Tuesday! I don't have a lot to contribute, but I did learn a really good tip from a friend last night. I never pay more than $2 per pound for meat, so unless that $4-$5 per pound hamburger is really on a good sale, I don't use much of it.
This week our Safeway store had round steak and roasts for $1.37 per pound. Ever hear of ground round? Take that roast to your butcher and ask him to grind it. Most grocery stores will do this for free. Translation: good, lean ground beef for only $1.37 per pound! You can do this with London broil also (flank steak), for extra lean ground beef. Why did I never think of this before?!? Too bad, the sale is over, but next time I will be prepared!!

cute alphas!
ReplyDeleteI used to do this in small town SD, because they always added a small amount of brown (old) hamburger to the new packs they made up. grrr! So I always had the butcher ground chuck roast, or whatever was on sale. I haven't been brave enough to approach the guys in the stores here yet LOL.
Hope you are having a nice week :) My tip is on CuriousCat this week.

Love the Alpha-burgers.
ReplyDeleteHave never tried that, even though I know one can - usually the butchers are such big guy and carry knives - I'm afraid to ask. Meat under $2? I don't know when the last time it was that I saw that - will have to pay better attention -- I'm happy with anything under $4/lb.
This is a GREAT TW tip! Thanks for sharing!
